There is a great Marshall McLuhan book called “The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man” and while he is looking at the domination of print in culture I reckon now it’s massive amount of “illustration” we are being subjected to.
And at the risk of stating the obvious I realise that it’s the students who are coming out of the art colleges with art degrees who are doing the the craft making, essentially it’s a product they have made with an illustration on it. The seems to be recurring illustrations of birds for some reason. I think the phrase I am gasping at is “a frenzy of illustration” look at the the massive product line of Kath Kidson I think there is nothing sadder than a woman in her 50’s with a rose bud satchel.

I have a theory that as children we get really turned on by book illustrations that some of us need to become artists I used to get art students to bring in their favourite childhood book and talk about the illustrations.

So I was counting down the days until Mark Hearld’s Work Book came out because he is just so stunningly great, fresh and free. Love shines through his work. But best of all is a beautiful mind map of “A chart of inspirations themes and connections in Mark Heralds Head” and I think I’ll get it copied up to A1 and stick it on the wall.
It’s the money shot. He has laid it all out and connected up the dots. It’s shockingly great. Breathtaking.
