I am going to bind a book and plant potatoes but not at the same time.

I am going to chain myself to the bench and produce an original piece of bookbinding. Not a book that I think will sell in the craft shop and it’s not going to be for a commission as I cant attract commission work if my life depended on it.

Its going to be a book that best reflects my idea of what a book should be.

Mainly it has to be handsome and it’s construction has to give pleasure.

I am going to ditch the little goldilocks model.

And I am going back to big scary book as a weapon model.

But before I go and make endpapers I am going to plant some potatoes in containers at the allotment and if do good I am going the timber shop to get some wood to make a cage for the brussel sprouts.

We are all poor toms and we are a cold.

These are the labels of all the little plants that caught a cold. Even though I had bought them fleece and I didn’t put it on them. We had a late frost and it killed all the tender plants.
The brassicas are as tough as old boots and peas and mange tout were fine.

So opportunity to start again is always welcome. I have plenty of seeds.
Next year I will have a heated greenhouse for the seedlings. The smell of paraffin in the morning!

I was thinking this morning I wanted to grow cannellini beans because I made ‘sloppy joes’ last week with them and it was lovely so I looked up the seeds and found a supplier and I realised that I would be buying more and before long a simple idea for good grub would cost me at least £20!
Then I realised that I could just go to the supermarket and buy a bag of beans and use them.
Wily old Deirdre.

That way I can grow black eyed, kidney, butter, brown, lima and haricots!

I made this for my lunch.

on being judged by my appearance.

Sometimes I am acutely aware that the people around me have drawn their conclusion about my appearance and will proceed to action. At a recent workshop I taught at when I walked in to the room a student burst out laughing and then tried to recover from his embarrassment. I have been in coffee shops and restaurants and have been given the ‘evil eye’ that I ‘knew’ instinctively that my appearance was upsetting and disturbing people. Last week as I crossed the path of a woman in the street she asked if I needed help with my shopping and it totally threw me as I was just approaching my house and I was saying a breezy ‘no thanks I just live here’ and I know she means well.
It’s just a constant have to deal with.

growing flowers in the front yard.

This year I am going to commit my self to actually making some art and it’s going to be about flowers and vegetables. So I have to plant flowers in the front yard all I do is buy lots of packs of seeds mix them in with some compost and broadcast the whole lot over the garden. It can be spectacular.

I’ve got some seed collections that I am looking forward to seeing. I love the idea of seeds for a balcony. I am going to round up all the flower pots and and empty them out add a big bag of compost and ‘grow more’ refill them and see what comes up.

I have ridiculous amounts of seeds. They come free with the magazines I even have a special tin for the tomatoes.

I had been taking down the seedlings and putting them in the poly tunnel I thought that they would be fine but they caught the frost so I starting over again. That is not going to happen to me again!
I will have a greenhouse next year and my desk back.

I had to wait in for a courier the other day and I decided that I would do put a cover on a book. I had totally forgotten how engrossing the process actually was. I’ve been so busy with the allotment that I have been neglecting my work.
It was great just processing letters, leather and paste.

I make such a mess when I work but that’s all right because I  clean it up.

Today I am waiting in for the courier so I have the ‘to do’ list I drew up for Tuesday.

And I am going to do the rest of it. I did the ‘do some leather lettering’ and I will make dinner and lunch.
The rest of the list looks lovely. I will look at books, try techniques, read all my project notes, prepare plant pots.
But obviously if the courier comes in the next five minutes I am off to the allotment.
