I am daft for soup. This is cauliflower cheese soup with is absolutely lovely. Yesterday it was chicken and butter nut squash with ginger and chilli to give it a bit of heat. Tomorrow it’s going to be ‘big soup’ which is tomato and big chunks of vegetables then covered with parmesan cheese.
I am also making books. It’s just like making soup.

This book is going to be very, very purple. I lined the spine with repeated coats of pva, then I used scrim and then I pasted out some good hand made paper and covered the whole spine and I rubbed it down with a bone folder left it over night and this morning covered the spine with some very thin leather.

The other two books I am making have each been made from a single sheet of Fabranio paper and I decided not to trim the book because the paper is the most valuable thing in it so I not going to waste a millimetre. One of these books will have an owl on it.
Client wants an owl client gets an owl.

When the bookbinding commissions stopped happening I switched to generating multiple books. I practised making smaller books in series of tens and because I had no market place I stuck them on the shelves.

So when I have an idea I can test it ten times.

The book as talisman.

This is a little book I made a few weeks ago and I really like it. I particularly like how if feels in my hand and I actually love how it slides in my pocket and nests there.  It’s a regular little talisman.

I am guilty of the massive sweeping statements and I am guilty of every thing I say. But it occurs to me that I just might be able to navigate a way through of making books as best as I can and that means selling them so I can buy materials and tools.

If I stick to a small format and embrace the cute (as opposed to the ‘suck’) I might be successful.

I gathered up some of the little books that were half finished and got them finished and took them down to the craft shop.
People need to buy stuff and I need money for tools and materials.

The covers are some nice examples of traditional English marbling, the very funky French marbling and some beautiful hand decorated paper from the lovely Jefferies in Edinburgh.

People want birds on things so it’s time to embrace the suck that is putting an owl on a book. I need the money and they need the present!
